Welcome to the 1, 2, 3…Swing Golf Series!

Playing Your Best Golf Most of the Time

Like any other skill or talent, playing a good game of golf doesn’t just happen.  First, you have to develop the right skills; then you have to hone them.  Once you learn the fundamentals of golf, you have to zero in on specific areas in which you need improvement.

It’s like an ongoing journey; one over which you have more control than you might think.  While those who don’t play golf may think you’re merely hitting a ball with a stick, you know the truth; you know there are multiple layers involved in the sport.

Uncovering the Layers of Golf

While a five-year-old child can swing a golf club, perfecting your swing is going to take time and dedicated practice.  Each time you swing your club, you should have a specific plan, that is, you don’t want your perfect shot to be an accident; you want to know exactly what you did to achieve that shot so you can repeat it each and every time you swing.

There’s plenty of work to be done before you even attempt to swing your club, though.  Before you are ready to swing your club, you have to perfect your grip.  It may take a while for you to choose the type of grip you are most comfortable with and then practice using the grip that works best for you.

Your stance is another important consideration and something that will impact your golf game in a huge way.  While it may sound silly to some that the way you stand can have such a big impact on your overall game, practicing your stance is just as important as practicing other components of the game.  After all, you can’t expect to sink the perfect shot if you’re not aligned with the ball correctly.  Think about it; if your body isn’t properly aligned, neither is your club.

While the game of golf is nowhere near as physically demanding as most sports, getting in shape and staying in shape is an important component to the success of any golf player.  Playing golf requires more stamina than it may look like it does when watching a game on television and your fitness level is going to have a direct result on your game.

The right equipment is another component of the game of golf that can seriously impact your game.  While it may take some time and experience to discover just what the right equipment entails, this component cannot be ignored.  While most beginning golfers don’t even need to start out with a full set of clubs, many beginners get caught up in the excitement and immediately purchase an expensive set of clubs before they even know the fundamentals of the game.

As you can see, there are many components to playing the game of golf and many areas in which most people can improve even after they learn the fundamentals.  In the coming days, we’ll take a look at some of these components individually as each one will contribute to the overall success of your game.
